The company makes these models available on its website as application programming interfaces, or APIs, which make it easy for other software developers to plug models into their own code. With ChatGPT, OpenAI took that concept, streamlined it by fine-tuning a version of GPT-3 on chat transcripts, and released it for the public to play with.

2019: GPT and GPT-2

However, GPT-4 can now process and handle up to 25,000 words of text from the user. OpenAI did release a faster GPT-4 Turbo model in late 2023, but the company will have to move quickly if it wants to keep its lead in terms of response quality. OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. The founding team combined their diverse expertise in technology entrepreneurship, machine learning, and software engineering to create an organization focused on advancing artificial intelligence in a way that benefits humanity. OpenAI released an early demo of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, and the chatbot quickly went viral on social media as users shared examples of what it could do.

In January, OpenAI, the AI research company behind ChatGPT, released a free tool to target this problem. OpenAI’s “classifier” tool could only correctly identify 26% of AI-written text with a “likely AI-written” designation. Furthermore, it provided false positives 9% of the time, incorrectly identifying human-written work as AI-produced work. The free version of ChatGPT does not have the ability to search the internet for information.

Early LLMs were based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs) since these were the first models to handle sequences like text. But their ability to remember previous words was limited, and the training process was slow. Another highlight of the model is that it can support image-to-text, known as GPT-4 Turbo with Vision, which is available to all developers who have access to GPT-4. OpenAI recently gave a status update on the highly anticipated model, which will be OpenAI’s most advanced model yet, sharing that it plans to launch the model for general availability in the coming months. But despite GPT-4’s impressive skill set, few know about it and even fewer have tried it. That’s largely because getting access to OpenAI’s latest model requires a subscription to ChatGPT Plus.

ChatGPT was trained in a very similar way to InstructGPT, using a technique called reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). The basic idea is to take a large language model with a tendency to spit out anything it wants—in this case, GPT-3.5—and tune it by teaching it what kinds of responses human users actually prefer. A common criticism of large language models is that the cost of training them makes it hard for all but the richest labs to build one. This raises concerns that such powerful AI is being built by small corporate teams behind closed doors, without proper scrutiny and without the input of a wider research community.
